At present there are over 225 firms in the Printing and Packaging Sector in Trinidad and Tobago ranging from small to large. Although the printing sub-sector accounts for the largest number of firms, the plastic packaging sub-sector has over seventy-seven percent of the firms in the medium to large categories.
This industry is integral to many other industries, such as cosmetics, electronics, automotive, agricultural, construction, food and beverage, tourism, and agriculture sub-sectors, as well as education, to name a few, where established linkages exist.
In 2004, approximately TT$2Bn worth of investment was fueled into the printing and packaging industry. The total worth of products exported in 2004 was approximately TT$306.4Mn, which generated employment of approximately 3,963 persons. In addition, since 1999 the industry has contributed 3.0% annually to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Opportunities within the Sector
- Production continues to be conducted at a low cost, which is readily accepted by customers within the region.
- The TTBS and EMA are very active and a strong alliance with them will only benefit the players in this Sector as they seek to compete effectively in international markets.
- The use of the Internet as a marketing tool is becoming increasingly more effective to reach new markets. Further the customer of today is more Internet savvy than before and age presents no boundary.
Strategic Partnerships
The PPIC is actively seeking strategic partnerships with other organisations, both within and outside the print sector, locally, regionally or internationally. The primary purpose is to improve the productivity and profitability of the Painting and Packaging Industry. A number of strategically important initiatives has already begun and others are currently being looked into.
